Snowbird Ski Resort owner, Dick Bass, is co-owner for PacRim Coal, LLC, which aims to build Alaska's largest coal mine. If built, the Chuitna Coal Mine would directly mine through 11 miles of salmon spawning habitat, and dump 7 million gallons of waste per day into the Chuitna watershed. The proposed mine will produce more than 12 million tons of coal annually, which would be exported to Asian markets. When all the coal is burned, it will emit more than one trillion pounds of CO2 -- that's more than the annual emissions of a billion cars!
So our coalition headed to the Outdoor Retailer Show and the SIA Snow Show to urge Dick Bass to divest from the Chuitna Coal Strip Mine, to keep his weather dependent industry on track. Follow us on Facebook or Twitter, and we'll be posting more videos and pictures as we go. Keep checking back, and don't forget you can still sign our petition!
We know that coal is killing the ski industry. Coal is the number one contributor to global climate change, which is already jeopardizing our winters. It's ironic that Dick Bass, owner of Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort, has invested in a developing coal mine in Alaska that will pump trillions of pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere. Doesn't make much sense to us...
PacRim Coal, co-owned by Dick Bass, is currently in the process of securing state and federal permits to build the largest coal mine in Alaska's history, the Chuitna Coal Project. Not only will the mine completely destroy 30 square miles of pristine Alaskan wilderness, it will emit up to 54 billion pounds of CO2 when burned—the equivalent of 4.5 million cars per year.
